Why Coast FIRE?
Imagine a Life Where Saving Is Optional

The Problem
You're saving hard — but can't see the finish line
You max out your 401(k), cut expenses, and do everything right. But the traditional path says work until 65. What if there was a checkpoint where you could stop?

The Insight
Compound growth can finish the job for you
Coast FIRE is the exact dollar amount where your existing investments will grow to cover retirement — even if you never invest another dollar. It's the mathematical point where time becomes your greatest asset.
- Your money doubles roughly every 10 years at 7% real returns
- $250K at age 30 becomes $1M+ by 60 — without adding a cent
- The earlier you hit the number, the more freedom you unlock

The Payoff
Work because you want to — not because you have to
After reaching Coast FIRE, your only job is covering today's expenses. Switch careers. Go part-time. Start a passion project. Travel. The pressure to maximize income disappears.

4 Simple Steps
How Coast FIRE Works
Save hard early, then let compound growth do the heavy lifting for the rest of your life.
Know Your Retirement Number
The 4% rule says you need 25x your annual expenses. Spending $40K/year? Your target is $1,000,000.
Discount It to Today
Factor in real investment returns (after inflation) to find what that number is worth right now. That's your Coast FIRE number.
Hit the Number & Coast
Once your portfolio reaches it, compound growth takes over. You can stop contributing to retirement entirely.
Live Life on Your Terms
Take a lower-stress job, go part-time, travel, start a business. Just cover daily expenses and let your investments grow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Coast FIRE.
Coast FIRE (Coast FI) is a financial milestone where you've saved enough that compound growth alone will fund your retirement — even if you never invest another dollar. After reaching it, you only need to cover current living expenses.
Traditional FIRE requires 25x annual expenses to retire fully. Coast FIRE is an earlier checkpoint — your investments are on track for retirement, but you still work to cover today's costs. Most people reach it 10-20 years before full FIRE.
The 4% rule (from the Trinity Study) says you can withdraw 4% of your portfolio each year in retirement with low risk of running out over 30 years. So your retirement target = annual expenses x 25.
$1M in 30 years won't buy what $1M buys today. This calculator uses real (inflation-adjusted) returns so your Coast FIRE number reflects actual future purchasing power — unlike many tools that ignore inflation.
Barista FIRE means working part-time to cover living expenses (and possibly get benefits like health insurance) while your investments grow. Our simulator shows how even modest part-time income dramatically lowers your target.
The U.S. stock market has historically returned ~10% nominally (~7% after inflation). Our Moderate scenario uses 7%/3%. Use Conservative (5%/4%) for safety, or Aggressive (10%/2%) if you're bullish.
